The Laughing Salesman (NEW)

Post by Max-Vader » Tue Apr 18, 2017 8:45 am

"My name is Moguro Fukuzou. They call me the Laughing Salesman. Oh, I’m no ordinary salesman. The merchandise I deal with is hearts… Yes, human hearts. All people in this world – old, young, man, and woman – are lonely at heart. I will fill that emptiness in their hearts. Oh, no. I don’t need a single yen. There is no greater reward than to see a satisfied customer."

The Laughing Salesman is a series that was created all the way back in 1968 - by the same people that made Doraemon, if you can believe it. It also had an anime in 1991 that ran for 120 episodes. All these years later, some wonderful person decided to remake the anime as Laughing Salesman NEW and bring it to the west for the first time.

The plot of the series consists of a shady person or perhaps being calling himself Moguro Fukuzou. Each episode is split into two seperate stories of him picking out a "client" and solving one of their problems. Ultimately, the personal flaws of the people he makes a deal with cause them to either renege on it by breaking their promises in some way or just get carried away with their new-found delight. Moguro then inflicts some sort of ironic punishment on them. Basically, if you like dark humor and aren't triggered by the fact that the protagonist is evil (cough ANN cough), you'll love this series. Discuss.

Also, here is an example of a typical episode:

I saw an episode (the one with the guy who want to date the woman with the face mask) and I really enjoyed it. In a way I can't help thinking of Franken Fran since the protagonist also helps people with their problems (whether they want it or not) and things can get disastrous. Granted Fran is well-meaning and I'd say true neutral on the alignment scale. (Yeah, I'm a tabletop geek.)

Well, Max wasn't kidding that ANN didn't have it on its stream list. In any event, the clip he presented caught my interest. That and the avatar; I really want to see the Christmas episode.

I been keeping up with the show as well, it's pretty good. The first episode of the second half is still my most favorite though.

Still need to watch some of the old episodes of it.

Well it looks like there's another show on my 'to watch' list.

So I've been trying to keep up with all the episodes of the old anime that I can find (25 episodes subbed according to 9anime), and I found out that 2 of the stories from NEW were retellings of episodes from the old one. Makes me wonder if the entirety of NEW is just retellings of old episodes.

So I found the anifem review of Laughing Salesman episode 1. I believe animefeminist has done something truly remarkable: they have a professional writer/reviewer who I argue is actually worse than ANN's Carl Kimlinger. (He was mentioned in The Other Side episode 69 during the discussion of ANN's review section.) While both reviewers cannot comprehend the concept of a villain protagonist, animefemist's Amelia Cook also has extreme difficulty understanding the concept of parables, and is upset that sudden ugliness is treated as a punishment.

I will leave examples of both reviewers' work just so people can compare the two.

After reading that dumb-as-shit review on Anifem.com, I can't help but feel utmost despair that people willingly donated to the charlatan that wrote that "review." Though at the same time it's also hilarious that she managed to outsuck one of ANN's worst reviewers.

Amelia Cook was apparently so triggered by the ugly women thing that she dropped Laughing Salesman down to the bottom of her recommendations. Thanks to that, Laughing Salesman is below a show called Twin Angel Break (crossdressing moe magical girl(?) show with 12 year olds in idol stripper outfits,) and just above Tsugumomo. (It's a show where a magical girlfriend appears from the sash of the protagonist's dead mom after he masturbates to its smell for a couple years. Also his older sister wants to rape him because it's a harem show.)
